Solar powered street lamps are providing safer conditions for US soldiers and Iraqi commerce to operate in.  As military operations cleared out insurgents, the installation of street lamps was instrumental in avoiding their return.  US soldiers have lauded the new lights and even mentioned to reporters that they’d like to bring this technology home to America.

Merchants and restaurants are now able to stay open later because of the security that these simple lights provide.  Some have even been enticed to return to their homeland after months or years in neighboring countries.

The often unstable Iraqi electrical grid is not over burdened by the addition of thousands of lamps from Baghdad to Basra.
